What this Blog is all about
Unfortunately but (as I know today) inevitably, my employer went bankrupt on 29/09/2006. Wow! That was bad news. Or so I thought. After much thinking I suddenly realized that this is the perfect opportunity to clean up my life and to focus on something new and completely different, on a profession I secretly always admired but never actually dared to try: I decided to earn my money as a press photographer.
Why photography?
I have been taking pictures for ages - starting with a Canon AE-1 Program back in 1982 when I was 17. I always thought that this is a great hobby, and over the years I extended my Canon equipment. Last year I replaced the old equipment with a brand new digital SLR, a Canon EOS 1ds mark II. Gosh. What a camera. I purchased five lenses along the body, and I am speechless again and again when I look at the superb results of that camera. Recently I got another body, the ultra-fast Canon EOS 1d mark II N, and so I am perfectly prepared for all the hard press work that lies ahead of me. :-)
Why press photography?
Well, I think I like the immediacy of press photos. They conserve moments for eternity that will probably never come back and might otherwise be lost. Hopefully the photos are done in a visually appealing way, like the photos of Getty Images Editorial enabling the viewer to immediately understand and almost feel the situation. Over the past decades, there have been so many unforgettable press photos - just think about the flag on Ground Zero right after the attacks in 2001. But I bet that you have "your" favourite press photo. Maybe you have forgotten about it, but whenever you see that photo, you will get that very special feeling that only a good (press) photo can provide.
What's next?
As I am still officially employed I have not started to work full-time (which is somehow sad). But I am setting up everything, including a server for picture downloads, and I am gathering as much tips as I can get hold of. Also, I am practicing a lot with the two cameras.
On this blog I will keep you updated, and I would like to invite you to follow my progress over time. I really appreciate your comments and your questions. I will try to answer as good as possible.
So, please, wish me luck. I guess I will need it! :-)
